Day 6, In New Mexico heading for the Grand Canyon

I'll be posting pictures to this post today if we can hit a spot with WiFi...so try to use your imagination for now!!

Day 6: I know why the Aliens landed here!

Today we are on the road pretty much the whole day, and seeing the terrain change from flat old Texas Panhandle to rolling desert mountains and mesas of New Mexico appear are overwhelmingly beautiful.

We are heading Westward as fast as possible, noting the distance and timetable are longer than we anticipated. We had to scrub our Tucson, AZ overnight to visit a dear old friend and a relative to plod onward toward our ultimate destination-the ocean!!

A lot of you have called, texted and been great company and also to remind us people really are reading and seeing what were doing. This blog today is going to contain a bit more writing and pictures since Laura wont let me drive and I have nothing to do but type LOL!!

You also might be wondering how we are faring as far as “close quarters go” I had no doubt that when planning our trip years ago, if there was one person I could go with, it was surely Laura. She & I are truly a Thelma & Louise. And I am proud to say, she only told me to “shut your mouth & eyes” once in 1536 miles!! (I do not like semi sandwiches in big cities)

Laura is laughing at what I just wrote-see?? J

Okay, Route 66, the amazing thing is, there is tons of hospitality at each state visitor center-free coffee, guides, coupons and maps. They are friendly and warm and helpful-then you get on the road with these lovely colorful maps and guides, and you begin to look and hunt for a certain exit, or city the little dot is right by. Guess what?? These dots move-they have been known to jump from exit 89 back all the way to exit 84 in one question! Some people are working right where this dot is-historical landmark right?? They have no clue what I want, but they will sell my an eggroll or a burrito.

So, underwhelming is the whole Route 66, I have had more fun looking through brochures and picture cards to see the sights and icons of route 66 lit up and read the stories. Really.

We stayed last night at the Fifth Seasons Inn & Suites for a (gasp) whopping $39. We weren’t sure we had the right place pulling up in the rain last night, the hotel looked packed, big and the lobby looked elegant and reminded me of something my sister, Shirley, would have designed or at least approved of. So we check in and go to he “Old wing” Ahhhh….now I get it, so the room was a seedy door missing a number, cracks in the electric outlets and definitely needing MAJOR updating. But the beds were wonderful, the TV worked (After I hit it a few times) and the air was sweet (Still 107 and pouring rain outside in Amarillo.) We also had FREE internet and in the morning we got a HOT breakfast fresh made real eggs, toast and bacon. Not too shabby.

The thing that has impressed me most is the friendliness of most anyone we’ve seen-and continuing onwards, realizing this is a great trip. I believe everyone needs to do this with someone you love (and can live with).

We'll be back hopefully late tonight (actually, for you all it will be the middle of the night!! LOL)

  1. Bummer you could not make it to Tuscon like you had wanted. :-( But am sure you will enjoy the Pacific coast when you make it. Am going to guess that you made it to or thru Flagstaff and probably enjoyed your time. Just make sure you do not take the Jet powered Sub off that big deep ditch known as the Grand Canyon. :-) You can play T & L just so far now. Best of luck and enjoy your trip.

  2. Don't forget Sedona and a meal at Collins (you'll need it as good food is hard to come by on the way to the Canyon)! Sarah and I are both giddy at the fact you are reliving bits of our trip!
